I flew from San Francisco to Chicago. Drove from Illinois to Alabama… Just to meet and speak with my incarcerated father face-to-face for the 1st time in almost 20 years…
He told me about being born in Germany, his teenage experience of running away to be with the hippies in the mountains of New mexico, why he never really knew his biological mother or father, and even told me about how he felt when my mother took my sister and I away from him and headed to California…
Calm words from a scarred man echoed off the walls of a visiting room in a state facility.
After all of the words we exchanged, one statement resonated with me; It’s a common quote- something that I’ve heard before-but I will never forget hearing it from my father…
OG Told Me: “Prison only exist in the mind”- Pendarvis Harshaw
And although that’s what he told me… he showed me that prison can also exist in the heart …
In turn, I wrote this:
Prison Only Exists in The Mind: Meeting My Father For The First Time.
